Thank you Ghost In The Shell for the wonderful collector’s poster. I got it last week and now just have to find a place to hang it. I believe in this movie and a huge thanks to the cast, crew, production team, director, marketing team and special effects team for making this movie possible. Love the movie. Steve Aoki is over-rated. Stop messing with the classic sound of Kenji Kawai.
This looks amazing and I’ve been a hardcore GITS fan for over 20 years. People need to either embrace this version or just stop whining.
I really don’t like getting into the specifics or “politics” of any given situation or bringing up the most ugliness of controversy and in this film’s case, an accusation of “whitewashing”, but I feel I need to set the record straight for the film and even why I believe the fans are so upset.
#5 A great release date: March 31, 2017
Number one, I don’t think anyone is genuinely or deliberately racist since most people aren’t usually monsters or evil horrible people because they choose to just because, but because of upbringing, environmental socialization, being taught incorrectly from a long line of improper thinking and subterfuge which gets into people’s minds or mental illness. And since these filmmakers are working in such a massive industry and doing some of this important stuff involving film-making, I cannot imagine them being racist since they have to work with so many people, and work in such a public forum.
However, the main problem comes down, not to whitewashing, although the writer of the film’s video defending the decision to cast Scarlet by saying “there aren’t any good actresses from Japan, was not a good idea as far as I’m concerned. But to filmmakers assuming because Ghost In The Shell is more of an underground cult classic hit, rather than an extremely popular franchise or character property, such as Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Indiana Jones, or even James Bond, that they underestimated that the fans think of this franchise as very specifically Japanese, and they do feel strong enough of a love for this character that they see no reason for a change to her ethnicity and genuinely see her as Japanese. Just as we wouldn’t perhaps cast a black man or Asian man to play Indiana Jones. Not that this would be bad, but he’s edged in everyone’s memory from that point of view, as an all-American blonde heroic man type and this would deviate rather dramatically.
Here’s the thing, all the characters names in the film have the same names as they did from the anime, except for Scarlet Johansson’s character, and they are all not being played by Japanese people. Their perspective of keeping their names seemed to say they are somewhat inclusive and keeping everyone able to be one group aside from the seemingly very specific Japanese name of Motoko Kusanagi.
So with that said, take it as you will, but please don’t start a hatred and anger lashing out, as I’m not planning on coming back to reply per say, as I just wanted to put this information out there as food for thought. Anyways, have a good night, everyone
